Agree. America, the wasteland of beer until about ten years ago, is now hopping with many new offerings. In fact, it hard to find as good a choice in Europe now as you can fine - in certain places - in America. The higher alcohol beers can be a bit hard to handle for some, but personally I treated San Adams Imperial White (which I can no longer find) as a wine, because it drinks like a good wine. Dogfish Heads are typical of beers I like to mix over the course of an evening for lots of good taste. Again, with 9 or 10% alcohol, they are perhaps best escorted with a less noble drink.

Now John, let's be careful with this calorie counting nonsense. Imperial Stouts are in a class by themselves and should be treated with proper reverence. Thoughts of calories need to banished. Feelings of guilt may come through. These feelings will only cause unnecessary distractions from the task at hand.

The Victory is a terrific stout. Good choice.

In 1844, it was probably a good beer. It was almost certainly a local beer and there were probably a lot of great lagers and ales in the U.S. Prohibition destroyed the brewing industry in our country and when it came back it got caught in the web of commercial brewing corporations. Some local brews persisted until about the 1970s when Coors, Lucky Lager, Firehouse, Iron City and several other fine local beers were "nationalized" and sold coast to coast. Now, really good beers are returning to America under the guise of "microbrewing". I have not tried the new Budweisers that their new owner is bringing in - they might be good - Check those out! Throughout Europe - except for Italy - you can order a "beer" and they will bring you a local brew - great. In America, you have to specify the brand you want. And as far as vienna sausages go, the last one I had was in Vienna, and it was a boiled bratwurst - delicious! But as far as the American "mistakes in a can", I wouldn't even put one of those in a Pabst - I think that might generate some karmic problems down the road.

Matthew, sorry you had an issue with it. I didn't have that problem with mine. Typically when I get a bottle of beer that seems to be over carbonated, the beer will turn out to be beyond its recommended shelf life. I would assume that your bottle came from the 2010 batch, which means it should have been within the specified date range, but there is a possibility that it could have been from a previous batch. If you liked the beer beyond that issue, I recommend giving it another try :)
