Arrogant Bastard Ale

Arrogant Bastard Ale

This beer has been on my to-do list for a while, but since it's not a style I drink regularly, I kept putting it off. I finally broke down and added this bomber to my shopping cart on my last visit to Gail's Hops and Grapes.

Stone Brewing Company's Arrogant Bastard Ale is rather unique.  I guess the easiest way to describe this beer is a richly amber colored HOP EXPLOSION.  It rings in at 7.2% ABV, so it also has a significant alcohol punch, but the flavor is still excellent at cooler temperatures.  I knew this beer was hoppy, so I was prepared for it when I took my first sip.  As soon as I did, I was almost let down.  The initial taste was rather malty and sweet, but about 3 or 4 seconds into that first sip, the hops came on like a street corner crack whore.  The hop bill and IBU rating for this brew are listed as classified!  It's just hard to pass by on a beer that contains this note on the bottle label:

This is an agressive beer.  You probably won't like it.  It is quite doubtful that you have the taste or sophistication to be able to appreciate an ale of this quality and depth.  We would suggest that you stick to safer and more familiar territory --- maybe something with a multi-million dollar ad campaign aimed at convincing you it's made in a little brewery, or one that implies that their tasteless fizzy yellow beer will give you more sex appeal.  Perhaps you think multi-million dollar ad campaigns make a beer taste better.  Perhaps you're mouthing these words as you read this.

I highly suggest clicking on the Arrogant Bastard Ale link above and reading the material on the website for this specific brew.  It's quite entertaining!

Coney Island Lager

Coney Island Lager

I'm not generally swayed in my beer purchases by fancy packaging, but I'll admit right up front that I purchased this beer because of the super cool label on the bottle.  So, that being said, today's sampling is Coney Island Lager from Shmaltz Brewing Company in Saratoga Springs, New York.

Coney Island Lager pours a very nice amber color with an excellent foamy head that hangs around in a thinner form throughout the entire glass.  The beer has a crisp mouth feel and a good hop and malt balance with a light to medium body.  Comparatively, this is not a beer I would buy regularly, but it's not a bad brew at all.

I picked this up yesterday on a run to Gail's Hops and Grapes.  I picked up five more brews that I'm excited about adding to my tasting regimen.  The next brew I'll sample is one that I have been putting off way too long, so stay tuned :)

Flensburger Dunkel

Flensburger Dunkel

Tonight's sampling is Flensburger Dunkel from Flensburger Brauerei in Flensburger, Germany.  Flensburger Dunkel is a Munich dark lager style beer that rings in at 4.8% ABV.  It has a nice head that sticks around for the duration of the drink and an excellent copper color.  This beer also has an excellent caramel and toasted malt note on the tongue.  It's very well balanced between malty sweetness and floral hoppiness.  This beer has a medium body and excellent flavor.

Homebrewing Notes:

The amber ale that I brewed a couple weeks ago is ready to go into the secondary fermenter sometime over the weekend.  I'll probably get around to that on Sunday.  I'm also going to wash some of the leftover California Ale yeast (WLP-001) and save it back for future brews.

Saranac Black Forest

Saranac Black Forest

The last time I was in Gail's Hops and Grapes, I spotted this bad boy sitting in the cooler down low and out of sight, so I snagged it.  Saranac Black Forest from The Matt Brewing Company in Utica, New York is schwarzbier, which is a black lager.    I was relatively unfamiliar with this beer style until this year when I tried the Schwarz at my local brewery.  I was quite surprised.  When you look at a beer like this one with the dark color and dark cream colored head, it immediately puts your mind in the stout and porter frame of thinking.  Upon your first sip, you are pleasantly surprised with a rather light body, crisp flavor, and a fantastic taste of caramel malt balanced with a fruity hop punch right behind it.  This beer is pretty darned good, but I won't put it on par with the New Belgium 1554 Enlightened Black Ale, but it is very similar to the Samuel Adams Black Lager.  If you have never tried a Schwarzbier, I would recommend giving one a whirl sometime.  You will be surprised!

Kingfisher Premium Lager

Kingfisher Premium Lager

Today's sample is from Kingfisher Brewing Company in Saratoga Springs, New York.  This beer is quite similar to the Peroni from a few days ago.  The head and color characteristis are almost identical, but the Kingfisher Lager has a little more pronounced hop presence compared to the sweet and malty character of the Peroni.  In a side-by-side comparision, I would take the Peroni.  The Kingfisher falls a bit too close to Budweiser to suit my taste.  There is no special characteristic in this brew that will draw me back for seconds.  However, I won't pour this one out.  It's still beer!  Kingfisher Premium lager rings in at 5.0% ABV and finished with a bit of a hop aftertaste.  If your grocer has no other selections, pick up a six-pack of this :)
