Victory Baltic Thunder
Here's another catch from Gail's Hops and Grapes that I reeled in this week. Victory Brewing Company's Baltic Thunder is another high gravity brew that needs to be served at 55-60 degrees. After I made this photo, I transferred it to my pewter tankard for a short warming session. While it's warming up, let's see what the bottle has to say about the beer...
Truly a worldly beer. Baltic Thunder represents the Baltic Porter style admirably. Exhibiting the enticing, toffee roast of the British porter that originated the style in the 18th century, and the soothing, subtle fruit nuance of contemporary brews that flourish from Helsinki to Vilnius today, this dark lager honors the Baltic god of thunder. Created by an inspired collaboration of brewers and tempered with a touch of turmoil, Baltic Thunder rolls on to bring you enchanting light as the darkness fades.
The website isn't very specific in any details of the internal composition of this beer. It simply states the use of European whole flower hops with imported German 2-row and roasted malts, with an ABV of 8.5%. The aroma of this beer hit me right away as I poured it into the glass. It actually made my mouth water.
At 58 degrees, the clouds part and the rays of sunshine start to settle in my mouth with this god of thunder. The complexity of the roasted malts produce a nice after taste and the overall body of the beer is not too thick. The higher temperature also hides the alcohol taste and creates drinkability as the BudMillerCoors people like to boast. This is definitely not a brew for the FizzyYellowBeerWussies. It'll put lead in your pencil.
