Rogue Dead Guy Ale

Rogue Dead Guy Ale

I can't say that I have been given bad advice on the Rogue Ales. My second tasting of their products was prompted by several comments I have received regarding the "Dead Guy Ale." I went to the World Market again this afternoon with the Great Tondini and picked up another mixed six-pack of stuff to try. They had the Dead Guy Ale so I grabbed one.  This beer is excellent, and it has one of the best color and clarity combinations I have seen so far.  Dead Guy Ale is brewed in the style of the Germain Maibock.

From the website:

In the style of a German Maibock, using our proprietary Pacman ale yeast... Deep honey in color with a malty aroma and a rich hearty flavor...

I'm not sure which Rogue I'll try next, but I'll definitely keep going through these beers until I cover all of them hopefully...

  1. Yes – a great beer. Try the Double Dead Guy next.

We tried the Bell’s Hopslam Ale this weekend – wow is all I can say.

  2. John, try their Shakespeare Stout and/or Chocolate Stout, if you’re into that sort of thing. Probably my second and third favorite beers of all time, any type.

if I could only drink one beer for the rest of my life, it’d most likely be Sammy Smith’s Oatmeal Stout…..although I’d hem and haw over the Shakespeare before I gave my final answer.

wish could get anything from Bell’s out here….have read great things but don’t think they’re distributed out here.

have you tried anything from Victory (PA) or Stone (CA)?

  3. I’ll eventually work my way through all the Rogue Ales. I have a source for both stouts that you mentioned and they will be coming down the pipe soon. I haven’t had very many of the Samuel Smith ales, but I have had a few of their nut browns, and they aren’t too bad. I haven’t tried Victory or Stone yet…

If you like stouts, there is one out your way that you should try sometime if it’s still being made… Deschutes Brewing Co. in Bend Oregon used to (and may still) make an “Obsidian Stout” that really knocked my sox off several years back when I tried it. I can’t get it here because it’s above the NC alcohol limit for beer…

  4. John, what’s the ABV limit out there now? I thought it got legislated up from 6% to something like 15% several years ago. I know there was a big push right about the time we moved out here in 2005, there was a group called “pop the cap” that was pushing for the higher ABV, and thought they had got that done.

Dang, too bad if 6 is still the rule. I’m with you on the Obsidian Stout….that’s a nice one.

Don’t think I’ve had anything that I didn’t care from from Stone. that Arrogant Bastard is a hops-y motherlode, it’ll get the gleekers going…..but still complex underneath. if you ever see their limited-release imperial russian stout, that’s a prize, too…..but if 6% is still in effect, guess you’d be “going through channels” for both of ‘em.

When I lived in Asheville, I used to drive north an hour to Johnson City, TN to get my high-ABV stuff. those were the days!

  5. I did a little research the other day to try to find the answer to the North Carolina ABV limits and coudln’t find anything. I do know that it has been raised above 6% though because I picked up a bomber of a 9% brew this afternoon also that I can’t wait to wrap my lips around :)
